I.) Introduction.
If one consults the genealogy of the Kerkhoven family - as it is printed in
"Nederlands Patriciaat" Vol.35 (1949) - one reads on page 140 that child No. 6. of
Ir. Adriaan R.W. Kerkhoven (1868 - 1944) and Constance P.M. Bosscha (1885 - 1961) was: Melisande Tatiana Marie, born April 10, 1919 in Saint Cloud (near Paris - France),
medical student in Groningen - Netherlands, + (shot by Nazis) at Harenermolen /
Glimmen on March 19, 1945.
As, in my opinion, this information is entirely inadequate, to say the least,
I took upon me ( though I am not a storyteller ) to supply the necessary information
for the population of the small city: KERKHOVEN, Minnesota, U.S.A. (and others who
may concern).
The full story of the heinous drama of ANDA deserves your tender attention.
I am very much indebted to her first cousin - son of the sister of Anda' s mother; Dr. Dirk Bosscha - Erdbrink, for providing me with the facts (as far as the have become known), and sending me s copy of her photograph at the age 14. ( see photo )
Until approximately a decade ago it was definitively not very customary - in Holland- to publish biographies of war- or resistance - heroes, or survivors of concentration-camps, ect.
However since then a flood of narratives of this kind has been published; some of these are excellent ones, and have real historical value.
This gives me the courage - repeating that I am not a born storywriter - to compile
what happened with ANDA ( her nickname ), because she deserves it terribly!
Be prepared for a hideous tale, for such is the truth!
II.) Background.
- the first of the family Kerkhoven, who went to the Dutch-Indies in 1860 -
13th child of Johannes Kerkhoven (1783 - 1859), the name giver of KERKHOVEN city-
Minnesota, and Anna Jacoba van der Hucht (1795 - 1856).
Anda's grandmother, partner of Eduard was a so-called "per-anakan", a Malayan - Chinese (born in Java) named; Tan, Goey (or Gwie) La Nio.
Adriaan was a very capable person, general manager and executive director of the large (family) - tea plantation; Panoembangan in West Java, and had a civil
engineering degree from Delft - Netherlands University.
He was a soft-natured personality with a very noble character, very athletic, fairly wealthy, and highly esteemed in society life.
He married his second cousin, Connie Bosscha, who was a granddaughter of Johannes and Anna's 12th child; Pauline Emilia (1833 - 1910).
